2. Do I need to use your grooving tool to groove pipe ends?
Answer: No special grooving tools are required because at GRINNELL we follow the C606 AWWA standard grooving specification. This standard allows you to use the same grooving tool no matter what the size of the pipe.
3. Is a mechanical joint, a green solution?
Answer: Yes. All GRINNELL products are manufactured with 90% recycled metal which would otherwise have been part of our Nation's solid waste stream. All waste paper, used cardboard, scrap wood and EPDM waste from our plants is recycled. Grooved products also eliminate the fumes and flames associated with welding and therefore present a much lower risk for installers and for clients.
4. What does the 10 year warranty cover?
Answer: Products manufactured by GRINNELL Products, a product line by Johnson Controls International, are warranted solely to the original buyer for 10 years against defects in material and workmanship when paid for and properly installed and maintained under normal use and service. 5. Is certification required to install the GRINNELL couplings?
Answer: GRINNELL couplings are quick and easy to install. No certification is necessary to use them. However, installer should read and follow published installation instructions. Very knowledgeable sales engineers are available throughout Asia Pacific to offer training and provide hands-on service.
6. Where can I view/find/order a mechanical catalogue?

7. What is BIM?
Answer: BIM is an acronym for Building Information Modelling. It generates building data prior to the construction of the building allowing you to better manage the project during its life cycle. Usually it uses three-dimensional building modeling software to amplify productivity in building design and construction. Our GRINNELL Technical Services department can produce a 3D model of the Mechanical Equipment Room in a HVAC project. GRINNELL experts virtually assemble your system to make sure it fits and to identify interferences before they occur. 1. Do I need a torque wrench to install the Figure 772 Rigid Coupling?
Answer: No, there is no requirement to use a torque wrench. The GRINNELL Figure 772 Rigid Coupling has a wide enough range that it can be installed with any standard wrench or ratchet, including a torque wrench.
2. Do I still need to use expansion joints or loops if I use grooved couplings and fittings in my heating system?
Answer: Piping should be designed to direct movement appropriately into areas that can compensate for this movement. Thermal growth and contraction in piping can be accommodated by "natural offset legs" at the end of piping that runs utilising flexible grooved couplings. This offset may eliminate the need for loops and expansion joints. A calculated movement analysis can be provided by GRINNELL Technical Services
3. Do I need to use flex connectors at pump and equipment connections if I use grooved couplings and fittings in my piping system?
Answer: The decision to use a Flexible Connector is the responsibility of the engineer having jurisdiction over the design. However, instead of a Flex Connector, many engineers choose to use three flexible couplings near the source of vibration to provide noise and vibration attenuation comparable to that of rubber or braided Flexible Connectors. Any combination of GRINNELL flexible couplings such as Figures 705 or 707 will work in this situation. Also, each subsequent coupling (whether rigid or flexible) used throughout the system will continue to reduce the vibration in the piping system. For this reason, many engineers consider the use of flexible couplings a better solution for noise attenuation than the use of Flexible Connectors. 4. What gasket should I use for heating hot water with glycol?
Answer: The standard Grade "E" EPDM Gasket can be used for heating hot water with glycol. If temperatures are elevated over 104 °C (220 °F), a silicone-based lubricant should be used. Contact the technical services for further information.
5. Does using a grooved system require you to use more hangers?
Answer: GRINNELL Figure 772 Rigid Couplings do not require more hangers than a welded system. Both Figure 772 couplings and welded joints follow allowable hanger spacing as specified in the applicable standards.
